Who’s That Girl?

Live Life, Live Healthy! That’s my motto. Well, that and “Dance like no one’s watching, love like you’ve never been hurt and live like there’s no tomorrow.” So who is SavvyHealthGirl? A thirty-something from the Windy City, who now lives in Washington, D.C. where Shiraz and conversations about politics is considered sexy. I truly love living in the nation’s capital, because there is always something interesting happening.

I try to maintain a positive outlook and live in the moment every day. Not always an easy feat, but it’s what makes life fun. My current job has me on a plane often, so quart-size ziploc bags for my lip gloss and blue foot covers have recently become a staple. So I live for my weekends where I can completely unwind and exhale, and writing is one way I do that.

I have such a passion for children and women, and improving their well-being. For the past 10 years, I have been working on children’s issues and in recent years began focusing more on women’s health. My professional background is in social work as well as maternal and child health, with advanced degrees in both fields. Currently, I am the executive director of an organization whose focus is on reducing infant mortality and improving birth outcomes. I absolutely love that I am heading up an organization that provides women with information that will improve her health and that of her infant.  Most of all, I am passionate about ensuring people have access to the resources they need to make informed decisions about their health. This is the primary goal of this blog. I hope to share a little of my personal experiences and expression, and plenty on women’s health, nutrition and fitness.

Although I work in health, I am still a woman trying to maintain her own healthy weight, eating habits, and intake of sugar and carbs. I too skip workouts, loathe push-ups, and can consume my share of Ben & Jerry’s. Breast cancer is an important issue to me because my grandmother is a long-time survivor. So, I too look forward to the information I will post and to improving my own health. None of us are perfect. We are all a work in progress. But hopefully through this blog we can all learn to be a little more savvy about our health. I invite you to join me on this blog-o-venture and oh the places you will go!

    Hi There!

I enjoy your blog and what it represents. Its always nice to see other crusaders of health, and self-discovery/empowerment for women. I especially enjoyed some of your posts on young teen women, as that is certainly a group that needs attention. I recently went to a high school to speak to a group of young ladies about their health and I was so shocked at some of their habits and attitudes about self-care. It inspired me to learn what more I can do.
I too have a blog here, dedicated to nurition, at http://www.offwhitliving.com. Feel free to stop in if you’d like.

    Thank you,
    Rebecca

So, I need to ask you a question. If you could pick up a fresh box of organiclly grown fruits, vegetables at your gym as you leave for home would that interest you? If this box came from local organic farmers who have a passion for prudent stewardship of the land and the delight of their customers would you partake of their offering to you in a more personal and convenient manner?

Thank you for your comment Karen, I apologize for just seeing this. I think for most people the idea of being able to grab organic fruits and veggies as they are leaving the gym, would be great. For me, it’s not an issue. It would be really nice and convenient, but I enjoy getting up on Sundays and heading to the farmers’ market. But I think you may be on to something. It’s sort of like the co-ops that are done where people can share boxes of fresh fruit and veggies and can pick them up once a week. I think people would like it and the gym may enjoy the partnership from a business stand point and a moral standpoint.
